According to the results of the Sixth Nationwide Polulation Census of China,in 2020,it is likely that Shanghais total population of the elderly who are aged 60 or older will exceed 5,300,000.This paper hence aims to carry out a research on the participation rate of the elderly educational programs,which are offered by Kang Jian Community Center in Kang Jian Community,Xuhui District.Interviews with the principal of the community center and surveys targeting at the retired elderly people are carried out.This study aims to investigate whether the elderly are participating actively in their community and what factors(e.g.age,health condition,marital state)affect the results.Although the survey covers limited areas and its results could not represent the whole district,it seems to fill the gap in studies of elderlys social participation and the research methods may be adapted to more professional research.
