Prior to 1970,porphyrinoids were merely colorful and curious natural products. The advent of synthetic heme-O2 complexes ushered in porphyrin to center stage of biomimetic chemistry. In this brief memoir I shall recount my participation in the birth of the first generation models of reversible O2-binding hemoglobin, the monooxygenation of cytochromes P-450,and the bimetallic active site of cytochrome c oxidase, all because of happenstance. In addition,my unfocused playful pursuits have led to the discovery of porphyrindione being the prosthetic group of bacterial heme d1 enzyme, and to the realization of some long-wavelength absorbing sensitizers potentially useful for treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma,as well as put me on the path to become the worlds principal supplier of octaethylporphyrin(OEP).
