Metamodel-assisted optimization has greatly improved the optimization of mechanical designs and civil engineering structures, due to their capacity to address complex MDO (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) problems through the use of inexpensive interpolation or regression models [1].However, the majority of general-purpose metamodels (polynomial response surfaces, kriging, artificial neural networks, radial basis function networks, etc.) are restricted to continuous variables, although versatile engineering problems also involve non-continuous (discrete, integer, and categorical) parameters.
