Information retrieval(IR) on the Internet is a key issue in electronic commerce(EC)．However，most of IR methods proposed up to today hardlysolve the semantic issues during the process of IR．The purpose of this paper is to propose a semantic information retrieval method based on semantic similarity degree(SSD) to resolve the above issue．The computational method of SSD is derived from the concept of object class similarity．To demonstrate the applicability and practicabilityof the proposed method，an IR system based On SSD is developed．We compare the proposed method with the keyword-based information retrieval methodby using the applications of IR in a web-based perfume information system．Results of comparison show the proposed method is better than the traditional approach．Thus，semantic information retrieval(SIR) is a promising research topic for both the researchers and practitioners．
