The thermodynamic properties of the ternary system MgCl2-NaCl-H2O are instructive for magnesium chloride purification from crude bischofite in salt lakes.According to our experience,the sodium content in bischofite cannot be decreased by recrystallization method.In order to explain this abnormal phenomenon,we need profound understanding the multi-temperature phase diagram of the ternary system MgCl2-NaCl-H2O.Since the crystallization field of MgCl2·6H2O is very narrow,the determination of the eutectic line between the MgCl2·6H2O and NaCl phases is a challenge.Although a lot of solubility experiments have been reported by many authors,a great discrepancy exists among them.So we determined the water activities of the system MgCl2-NaCl-H2O at 323.15 and 348.15 K,and constructed the phase diagrams and the eutectic line between the MgCl2·6H2O and NaCl phases of the system MgCl2-NaCl-H2O with the Pitzers ion interaction model from 298.15 K to 373.15 K,as shown in Figure 1.We carried out purification test using a new fractional crystallization method according to the simulated results,the sodium content in bischofite decreased from 1.21%to 0.17%.
