Amphiphilic boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, bearing a hydrophobic wedge at the meso-position and two hydrophilic cationic moieties at boron, form nanoaggregates in water through a highly cooperative self-assembly process. These aggregates exhibit characteristic spectral features of J-aggregates, i.e.red-shifted sharp absorption band, narrowed emission linewidth, and decreased fluorescence lifetime, as compared with the monomeric dye.
