Evidence for the presence of diabetes-like complications at prediabetic stage, prior to development of overt hyperglycemia, is emerging from both experimental and clinical studies.In our studies, high fat diet-fed mice (a model of alimentary prediabetes and obesity) displayed increased urination, urinary albumin and 8-isoprostane excretion, glomerular volume, and collagen deposition, in the absence of mesangial expansion and podocyte loss.Zucker fatty (fa/fa) rats, a model of hereditary obesity and prediabetes, manifested increasedserum NEFA, triglycefide, total cholesterol and VLDL/LDL cholesterol concentrations, as well as hyperinsulinemia and impaired glucose tolerance.
