The "junzi", as identified in the Lunyu, can be used to explore many of the challenges that need to be addressed in any Confucian mission in the world beyond East and South East Asia.The humanist and practical qualities of the "junzi" illustrate many of the most fundamental strengths of the Confucian tradition and most basic contrasts with Western certainties.Critical features of the "junzi" include :the word "junzi" has no adequate Western translation the word "junzi" is distinctively and uniquely Chinese the word "junzi" inspires education and experience the word "junzi" nurtures collegiality the word "junzi" is synonymous with humility the word "junzi" is spiritual but neither religious nor philosophical the word "junzi" captures unique administrative practicality the word "junzi" contrasts "xiaoren" (typical of a Western MBA?)the word "junzi" incorporates central values of Chinese culture the word "junzi" explains China s economic & political success the word "junzi" implies freedom from belief and faith the word "junzi" is the foundation of Chinese community the word "junzi" can highlight cultivated Western ignorance the word "junzi" illustrates the failings of Western corporate culture the word "junzi" and challenges facing the Confucian mission.
