Introduction. The main purpose behind controlling drug delivery is to achieve more effective therapies while eliminating the potential for both under-and overdosing.A major challenge for drug delivery is to control drug release both spatially and temporally.Drug delivery triggered by internal or external stimuli, such as pH, enzymes, magnetism, ultrasound, and heat, has recently attracted much attention because it represents a strategy to increase the drug concentration at the target location, decrease systemic toxicity, and allow greater temporal control over drug release compared to traditional drug delivery systems.Light-triggered drug release is an attractive approach for the spatiotemporal control of drug delivery. An alternative approach is to use the photothermal phenomenon mediated by gold nanoparticles.
