Rice (Oryza sativa) has unique floral patterns that contribute to grain yield.The rice floret consists of bract-like organs (lemma and palea), lodicules, six stamens and a carpel.Although most of the basic ABCDE functions have been retained in rice, it is still controversial about the identities of lemma and palea, which are grass specific organs, and the molecular mechanism underlying the specification of palea identities in rice, particularly the interaction among floral homeotic genes, remains poorly understood.
