Mallows defined the Cp statistic with an associated Cp plot to be used in model selection in regression analysis.The deviance plot is an extension of this idea,where the loss,expressed in residual sum of square,or the Chi-squared statistic is graphed against the degrees-of-freedom,thus allowing for comparing deviance/df ratios between models.
