Over the past decade,fragment based drug design has emerged as an alterative approach for drug discovery.It is a process whereby small but highly efficient ligands (fragments) are identified and then combined and/or optimized to produce high-affinity inhibitors.This approach provides an increased opportunity to obtain efficient and novel inhibitors,particularly for those targets that are not tractable using conventional strategies.At Abbott,we have successfully implemented a variety of fragment based screening methods,each of which provides unique benefits to certain target classes.This presentation will discuss some of the lessons we have leamed over the years and also discuss the trends of fragment screening strategies in the context of the increasing challenges for the pharmaceutical industry.
