This paper describes the remediation of a NORM contaminated site in Lower-Austria.In 2007 it was planned to erect a school in the vicinity of the site.Due to hints in literature about historical activities with Radium-226 on the site and after a small contaminated area was detected and remediated,the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety was engaged to ensure that no further NORM contamination may harm the people in this area.The site-history indicates that between 1910 and 1917 a chemical plant produces Radium containing products such as oils and salts for bathing.A description of the strategy to control the area,applied measurement methods,results and their consequences is provided.The detection of subsurface contamination,onsite measurements in a large scale,applied thresholds for clearance levels and the methodology to derive them,will be presented together with the regulatory framework,mass balances and unexpected difficulties during the remediation works.
