In a typical pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel assembly, fuel rods (FR) and control rods, supported by grillwork at intervals, are activated by surrounding coolant flow.FR are operating under dreadful conditions: high pressure, high speed, high temperature and high radiation.The fuel assembly should be designed so the FR are independent of external environmental factors, and receive minimal fretting wears from the supporting grid (SG).When operating, the fluctuating force of the turbulent coolant flow induces FR vibration.This excessive vibration of FR against SG is the main cause of fretting wear, which leads to the mechanical and then structural failure of the FR.
