Objective: One way to understand motives for which one person has attempted suicide is a suicide note. Methods: We have described results of our empirical study of the psychodynamic concepts of suicidal behaviour in the sample consisting of 30 hospitalized persons following the suicide attempt by self-poisoning treated at the Clinic of Toxicology in the Military Medical Academy, Belgrade, Serbia. Results: We have observed two types of the suicide attempters notes left for their loved ones and acquaintances. In the first type of the notes the suicide attempters most often explain motives for which they "were forced" to commit suicide. These notes contain direct verbal messages clearly indicating the reason of their decision to commit suicide, while less common are indirect messages in which they express lack of capacities to continue to live or they also reflect ambivalence toward the suicide attempt. They speak of unbearable psychological pain and hopelessness they feel, of their psychological exhaustion. These farewell messages are mostly positive and full of feelings addressed to the closest members of the family and expressing love.Less common are negative messages in which the attempters blame themselves. The second type of the suicide notes leave persons who are narcissistically embittered and they send negative messages to acquaintances and family members directly accusing them for their suicide. The suicide notes can be addressed to the state institutions (church and army) and they express verbal aggression. This kind of notes is most often in the form of a letter or diary, also often in the form of a sited text from well-known, popular poems, addressed to the loved person. There are also notes as verbal statements that the suicide uttered immediately before committing suicide to friends and the loved ones during the personal contact with them or by telephone. These messages were explained as the suicide note just after the suicide attempt.Lately, owing to new technical facilities SMS (Short Message Service) messages are sent.Ritual forgiveness in the form of presenting personal things (watch, equipment for personal hygiene, pay back debts) may also have a character of the farewell message.Verbal lapses may often be found in the text of messages, as well.In the view of two types of the suicide notes we have presented some vignettes from our work with suicide attempters describing each of the notes. Conclusion: Despite numerous constraints, the suicide note is some possibility for the clinician to find out thoughts of the person in the moment of the suicide attempt (commitment) because this can help them in their work atcrisis intervention.
