Allergies are very significant health problem afflicting 25% of the population in the industrialized world.Traditionally the type of allergy from which a patient suffers is diagnosed using skin prick testing using extracts from allergen sources.These solutions typically contain a multitude of both allergenic and non-allergenic proteins in highly variable composition.Some of the allergens are also cross-reactive across a number of species.Therefore, the specificity of this diagnostic test leaves a lot to desire.With the advent of recombinant allergens, it is now possible to exactly determine the sensitization profile with component resolved diagnostics using the ISAC(R) Immunocap allergen chip with just a drop of blood.The newest version, developed in the EU MEDALL project contains >170 allergen components.Immunotherapy is the only disease modifying treatment modality for allergies.The classical immunotherapy is done with allergen extracts, which are prescribed based on skin prick testing.Quite frequently patients are not treated correctly because of the inaccuracy of the testing procedure.Novel recombinant vaccines are now under clinical development which will greatly simplify immunotherapy.Combined with the ISAC(R), it will eventually become possible to taylor a vaccine mix to the exact sensitization profile of the patient in a truly personalized approach.
