Jurists hold differing views on when Private international law of China originated. One mainstream perspective is that Private international law of China originated from Yong-Hui Law of Tang dynasty whereas some other scholars maintain that Private international law of China originated at the end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China when foreign laws were introduced to China. However, the author of this paper proposes that Private international law of China originated from Han dynasty, when Liu Xijun,a princess of Han dynasty was married to her grandson under Wusun State law and the imperial edict issued by Emperor Wu of Han dynasty, ordering her to follow the customs and laws of Wusun State marks the birth of Private international law of China.
