The newly identified group of plant hormones strigolactones plays an important role in the regulation of shoot branching/tillering and root architecture in plants.In addition to this internal plant signalling function SLs are germination stimulants for root parasitic plant species of the Orobanchaceae, and chemical signals stimulating plant root colonization by symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi.
