Apple breeding is a lengthy process largely because of how long it takes for seedlings to flower and the subsequent time for reliable tree/fruit performance testing and selection.Understanding the genetic basis of complex traits is central to the development of new apple cultivars.Availability of apple genome sequence and cost-effective high throughput genotyping platforms have helped develop whole genome-based crop improvement methods such as genome-wide association (GWA) mapping and genomic selection (GS).
