Eukaryotic nucleosomes are generally modified at the cytosine residue of the DNA and amino terminus of the histone molecules.Operationally, these modifications function via disrupting chromatin contact or affecting recruitment of the protein factors.Modified chromatin facilitates higher order chromatin structure or may influence cellular function such as cell division and cell death.Enzymes that participate in chromatin modifications are histone acetyltransferase, histone deacetylase, arginine methyltransferase, lysine methyltransferase, kinase,DNA methyltransferase and ubiquitinase.During every successive cell division the epigenetic information need to be preserved for the survival of the organism.
