Like O3,PeroxyAcetyl Nitrate(PAN)is a by-product of a series of photochemicalreactions initiated by hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, which are major air pollutants inmegacities such as Seoul. Therefore,PAN has been investigated as an indicator of photochemicalsmog mostly in urban areas. The objective of this study is to determine the level of PAN along itsprecursors in Seoul and to understand key factors controlling it in conjunction with O3.The measurement of PAN was performed at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology,(KIST)from May 18th 2015 to June 12th.PAN was determined every two minutes using aGC-Luminol system. For in depth analysis,PAN and other measurements were averaged for tenminutes.PAN concentration ranged from 0.15 ppbv to 4.36 ppbv and its mean was 0.57 ppbv.In thisperiod, the range of O3 concentration was 1.7ppbv to 156 ppbv.Average concentrations of NOXand NMHC(Non methane hydrocarbon)were 26.5 ppbv and 48.1 ppbv, respectively.Theconcentrations of both PAN and O3 increased from 12h,and peaked at 14h~16h.Their correlationwas generally good but better in June than in May.Likewise, the daily maximum of PAN and O3concentrations were in better agreement with temperature in June than in May.Based on behaviorsof these species, local winds, and air mass history, the photochemical indicator species such asPAN and O3 reflect well the overall air quality in Seoul, particularly in May rather than in June.May was measured more less PAN concentration. It may be the strong west wind at PAN peaktime on May which did not allow the air mass to stay for a long time period.
