The aim of the study was to investigate influence of vitamin D on serum levels of interleukin-17(IL-17)on Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)with osteopenia.Osteoporosis is a major comorbidity in COPD.The IL-17 is a pro inflammatory cytokine that induce inflammatory factor cascades and upregulate RANKL resulting osteoclastogenesis.Vitamin D suppresses IL-17 and T regulator cell response reactivity to uncontrolled inflammatory in COPD.This study is a clinical trials with before and after design.Subject of this study was 29 COPD male patients with osteopenia. Results:The mean vitamin D serum levels was 20,1 ± 4,38 ng/ml and reached 26,15 ± 7,73 ng 12 weeks after 800 UI/day vitamin D supplementation(p<0,001).We found a significant increased of vitamin D level. The mean bone mass density was 0,80 ± 0,04 g/cm2 and T score-1,88 ± 0,37 gr/cm2.The median serum IL-17 levels before and after supplementations of vitamin D was 0,65(0,33-15,39)pg/ml and 0,67(0,33-37,94)pg/ml.No significant difference betwen serum level of IL-17 after 12 weeks supplementations of vitamin D(p=0,81).Conclusion:Supplementation of vitamin D for 12 weeks on male COPD patients with osteopenia significantly increased serum vitamin D level. However, serum IL-17 level not differ significantly.
