Chemical analysis and in vivo metabolism of Chinese herbal medicines have been challenging due to their complicated chemical composition.Rapid and sensitive methods based on Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) were used for comprehensive analysis of chemical constituents of herbal extracts and their in vivo metabolites.For chemical analysis,LC/MS are mainly used in two aspects:(1) to rapidly discover minor unknown compounds from herbal medicines,based on tandem mass spectrometry fragmentation studies of natural products and the application of orthogonal chromatographic separation;(2)comprehensive quality control of herbal medicines through chemical profiling combined with quantitation of multiple marker compounds.On the other hand,a new strategy"from single compounds to herbal extract"was proposed to systematically characterize the in vivo metabolites of herbal medicines.This strategy was applied to the most frequently used herbal medicine,licorice.Furthermore,a multi-component pharmacokinetic study of licorice was conducted,and the results indicated that co-existing compounds could alter the pharmacokinetics of single compounds.
