The WER-CPC epidermal patterning mechanism controls the differentiation of the Arabidopsis root epidermis into alternating files of root hair forming cells (H cells) and files of non-hair cells (NH cells). Here we show that the establishment of epidermal cell identities requires the strict spatio-temporal control of AFB-Aux/IAA-ARF-mediated auxin response in both the radial and proximo-distal axes.
