People with tinnitus continuously hear a sound, often described as ringing or buzzing in the ear.It is a very common and potentially devastating condition.Tinnitus is a phantom sound percept with many similarities to phantom limb pain.At present, there is no cure for tinnitus and its pathophysiology is unknown. An increasing body of evidence suggests a key role for both auditory and non-auditory (e.g.limbic) areas in the brain in the maintainance of the tinnitus percept.
