A large proportion of agro-processing waste is lignocellulosic material, which can be used for the production of biofuel and other useful products.Using current technologies, the cost of ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials is relatively high mainly due to the low yield and the high cost of the hydrolysis process.Power ultrasound may be used to enhance the kinetics of enzyme catalysed reactions including the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. The strong shear and microstreaming associated with cavitation facilitate mass transfer leading to improved substrate availability and removal of the products from the active site of the enzymes. The turbulent microstreams may also improve substrate availability by modification of macromolecular substrates such as cellulose.
