As one of the major water resources for a large part of China, variations in streamflow from the Yellow River greatly affect downstream discharge and water supplies. Thus, there is a need for research regarding the basic characteristics of the water resources for the upper reaches of the Yellow River, including its formation and evolution. However, studies indicate that the natural variation of stream gage records shows limited ability to predict long-term streamflow history. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze natural variation in streamflow inferred from proxies.
