  Some thirty years after Flower & Hayes seminal paper on the cognitive processes of writing, much attention has been given to developing research tools and methods to explore the otherwise hidden processes of composing.One of the most significant advances has been in the development of digital recording of the writers activity at the computer keyboard.Now, two decades after Keystroke Logging (KSL) began to appear as the chosen method for data collection, it has surely come of age as a tool for writing research.Numerous researchers working in a range of contexts (first language/second language, language impairment, in professional/educational settings) have employed KSL to elicit robust,manipulable data unobtrusively as the writer works at the keyboard.With the further development in recent years of new digital writing tools (Scriptlog, Inputlog,Eye and Pen), possibilities have opened up for broadening the scope and focus of writing research: to consider writing in relation to reading, for example, through the application of logging software in conjunction with eye-tracking, and to explore writing beyond the confines of the keyboard, for example, handwriting on a digital tablet.A rich cross-disciplinary research environment has grown up around KSL, addressing questions from micro and macro perspectives.Against the panorama of this inter-disciplinary research, we will consider the contribution KSL has made to our understanding of the writing process, review some of the issues which it has addressed, and propose some questions for our future research agenda.
