Human UDP glycosyltransferases (UGTs) catalyze the conjugation of chemicals containing a suitable nucleophilic atom (mainly, aliphatic or aromatic hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amino groups) with glucuronic acid. The formation of drug glucuronides in the human body can lead to severe health threats, e.g.due to the formation of pharmacologically active or toxic metabolites. These issues together with an increased usage of glucuronidated metabolites for doping control lead to a high demand for purified glucuronides for toxicity studies and as reference standards.
