我国拥有天然草原面积近4亿hm2,约占国土面积的41.7 ％,其中可利用草原面积3.31亿hm2,占草原总面积的84.3 ％,位居世界第二.草原是草地畜牧业发展的重要物质基础和牧区农牧民赖以生存的基本生产资料,也是我国面积最大的绿色生态屏障.草原的存在,一方面支撑着民族地区畜牧业的可持续发展,另一方面也是生态建设的重要组成部分,对维护国家生态安全、食品安全和社会稳定,保护人类和动物生存环境,具有十分重要的战略意义.
