Under the operating condition of a solid breeding blanket in pebble bed configuration,the ceramic breeder pebbles will conduct with complex thermo-mechanical behaviors.In this study,the Discrete Element Method(DEM)is adopted to generate randomly packed pebble bed taking into consideration the size distribution,particle sphericity and surface fiction of breeder pebbles.Based on these discrete packing structures,the uniaxial compression tests(UCT)and thermal expansion tests are implemented in the thermal-mechanical analysis of the pebble beds.The results indicate that the thermal-mechanical behaviors are highly anisotropic in pebble bed,especially between the internal region and near-wall region.The stress-strain properties vary with different packing structures,which are affected by the size distribution,particle sphericity and surface fricition of pebbles.Furthermore,the effective modulus and mean thermal expansion coefficient of the pebble bed are estimated.
