In order to discuss the environmental geochemistry of urban soil,7 soil profiles,355 topsoil (0-30cm) samples and 38 deep soil (150-180cm) samples were collected in Changchun city,a young city with a history no more than 206 year in the middle part of Northeastern China and were analyzed for As,Cd,Cu,Hg,Pb,Sn,Zn,and W.Total contents of As,Cd,Cu,Hg,Pb,Sn,Zn,and W in the vertical soil profiles show a steep decline from surface to 100cm or 120cm depth and then decrease little with depth. So the enrichment degree of the heavy metals could be evaluated by contrasting metal content of topsoil and that of deep soil and the enrichment factors of the heavy metals As,Cd,Cu,Hg,Pb,Sn,Zn,and W are 1.32,1.87,1.46,11.08,1.72,1.50,2.33 and 1.85,respectively.Spatial distribution of those heavy metals could be described by the contour maps. There are two areas in the city with higher accumulation of most heavy metals, the larger one lies in the mid-eastern part of the city,in which locate the railway station, primary town, and heat-engine plant; the other one locates in the main factory of the First automobile factory, the southwestern part of the urban area. The relatively high concentrations of heavy metals in the urban soil of the study area are mainly related to anthropogenic sources such as vehicle exhausts, civil heating, and heat-engine plant.
