Because of synthetic diamonds extreme hardness and abrasiveness, diamond tools were used extensively for cutting, grinding, drilling, and polishing strong materials, such as stone, concrete, advanced ceramics, cemented carbides, and other hard materials.Unfortunately,Synthetic diamonds inherent defects, such as crack and magnetic inclusions, deteriorated its own mechanical properties and thermal stability,as well as the working performances of the diamond tools. In this paper, the experiments of Ti and N ion implantation into synthetic diamond crystals had been carried out so as to improving the properties of diamond. The compressive strength and thermal stability of the ion-implanted synthetic diamond crystals were measured. Also, the effects of ion implantation on the transverse rupture strength and abrasive resistance of metal-bonded diamond impregnated composites were investigated. It showed that both its compressive strength and thermal stability remarkably increased after the diamond was implanted with the Ti and N ion because the defects on the surface of the diamond had been repaired by the ion.In comparison with that of the plain diamond, the compressive strength of the ion-implanted diamond was increased by 6~34 % and the weight loss ratio after heating was reduced by 20 %.The transverse rupture strength and abrasive resistance of the composite impregnated ion implanted diamond were notably improved as well.
