Microbial Bioremediation on Urban Lakes:A practical method for Cleansing Landscape Water

Eutrophication of urban area water is a worldwide increasing problem in populated cities.In this study,bioremediation were applied to cleanse municipal pollution of nine different urbanlakes in Wuhan city.Photosynthetic bacteria,heterotrophic and nitrite bacteria reagents were inoculated as Bio - Cleanser weekly to remove organic and inorganic pollutants in high efficiency.The combination of microbial reagents was used to eliminate cyanobacteria.During two months bio- enhanced treatment,the water conditions promoted from level worse Ⅴ to level Ⅳ or better according to Chinese Landscape water standard GB3838 -2002.Five main waste water indexes including COD,BOD5,Total N,Total P and pH were monitored,i.e.COD decreased from 16 mg/L to 6ppm and total Nitrogen decreased from 2.7 mg/L to 1.28 mg/L,total phosphate decreased from 0.6 mg/L to 0.2 mg/L,which dramatically inhibited the proliferating of cyanohacteria and algae,cyanobacteria stopped growth and coagulated in the lake Si Mei Tang within one month.The water conditions were dynamic equilibrated in subsequent 5 months and no turbulence happened without any microbial reagents sprayed into the lake.Here we demonstrated examples of successful bioremediation in situ and this method could be effectively applied in temperate and tropical areas.
