The present paper reports an investigation on the use of linking adverbials in the academic writing of Chinese doctoral students.The learner corpus used in the present study is composed of 20 doctoral dissertations of applied linguistics (of 1,110,515 running words).A control corpus of 120 published articles in six international journals of applied linguistics was also compiled as the norm of the analysis (of 1,140,755 running words).
