We are interested in the potential of sulfated glugans as vaginal microbicides for use in resource constrained settings that would reduce HIV-1 transmission by preventing entry of the virus to the cell.Several studies have shown that sulfated glucans possess properties that make them suitable for formulation as virucidal gels; they inhibit HIV-1 infection at micromolar concentrations, inhibit syncytium (multinucleated giant cell) formation and cell to cell adhesions. They are not cytotoxic and, importantly, selection for drug resistant HIV-lmutants is very low in vitro.
