Tourists are interested in understanding and appreciating the culture of a destination they visit,particularly if the culture is very different to their own.Cultural festival offers an opportunity for tourists to see,feel and sometimes participate in the culture they are visiting.This paper studies the Bun Festival in Hong Kong which started predominantly as a religious event some 200 years ago and evolved to become also a community-based tourism event today,and examine the role of community involvement and factors affecting the sustainability of the festival as a tourism event.The findings have applicability in studying the sustainability of other community-based tourism events.
