@@ Under stress conditions such as high light, heat, salt stresses, and nitrogen-deficiency, the unicellular green alga Haematococcus pluvialis start accumulating high amounts of astaxanthin. As we known, β-carotene ketolase and β -carotene hydroxylase are two key enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway of astaxanthin in H. pluvialis. A variety of environmental stresses can enhance the transcriptional activity of genes encoding for β -carotene ketolase and β-carotene hydroxylase, leading to production of large amounts of astaxanthin in the algae. However, there was still not appropriate approach to understand the regulatory mechanism at a molecular level lack of intact bkt promoter sequences and dependable genetic transformation system in H. pluvialis.
