Just before the onset of sensory experience,the developing spinal cord,cortex,hippocampus and retina exhibit spontaneous,rhythmic bursts of action potentials,which are thought to drive remodeling of initially crude neural connectivity.In the developing retina,retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and starburst amacrine cells generate periodic spontaneous bursts,and recruit nearby RGCs to fire action potentials.Therefore,this pattern of neuronal activity can propagate from one cell to the next in a wave-like manner,a phenomenon named as retinal waves.Retinal waves exist exactly during the period when RGCs projection patterns are shaped.Many lines of evidence indicate that retinal waves are necessary for the formation of precise retinotopic maps in LGN and SC.It is well established that the retinal wave is agedependent and will disappear just before the onset of vision.
