大量医学研究表明，易损斑块的典型特征是：大的脂质核心、薄的纤维帽和活动性炎症。血管内超声的成像深度(＞8cm)能够可视化整个斑块，但其在特异性识别斑块内脂质等重要组分方面能力不足。血管内光学相干断层成像的轴向分辨率(＜10μm)能够测量纤维帽的厚度，但是其成像深度非常有限。
