Agarwood is a very valuable non-timber forest product from wounded trees of some Aquilaria species.The huge demand for agarwood has led all the species of Aquilaria to be endangered and listed in CITES.Massive forestation for Aquilaria trees followed by getting agarwood through induction method is one of the most efficient indirect ways for the supply of agarwood and the conservation of wild Aquilaria forests.Existing agarwood-induction methods can only produce poor quality agarwood as a low yield.This study had reported and evaluated an efficient novel technology of producing agarwood in Aquilaria trees,which is called the whole-tree agarwood-induction technology (Agar-Wit).In our study,metabolizable chemical solution is used as agarwood inducer,which is transported into the Aquilaria tree slowly by the transpiration pull as it was injected into the xylem,and initiates the defensive response to produce secondary metabolites.With metabolism and accumulation,resin was finally formed inner the Aquilaria trees.It costs only $ 8 for the agarwood inducer and 10min on the prime operate process.In addition,ten different agarwood inducers were used on Agar-Wit to compare with three traditional agarwood-induction methods including partly-trunk-breaking method,burning-chisel-drilling method and fungi-inoculation method.As a result,Aquilaria tree treated with those ten inducer by Agar-Wit,agarwood can form and spread from the trunk to root and branch of the whole tree.6 months later,its yield per tree is 4 to 28 times higher than that of the traditional agarwood-induction methods.On the other hand,the quality of those agarwood by Agar-Wit and the traditional agarwood-induction methods were compare with two Super A wild agarwood in term of quality,including chemical constituents,ethanol-soluble extract content,and essential oil content.Consequently,those induced agarwood by Agar-Wit is better than that by traditional methods on the three quality-index,and have no obviously statistic different compared with the wild agarwood.Moreover,the quality ofagarwood that formed over 20 months by Agar-Wit in Aquilaria tree has very high similarity to Super A-grade wild agarwood.This paper is the first to report that the efficient novel whole-tree agarwood-induction technology in inducing agarwood formation in cultivated Aquilaria trees has been used to produce high-quality agarwood in a relatively short time period.To the best of our knowledge,this also is the first study to establish comprehensive evaluation methods to evaluate agarwood quality.
