Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) denotes the use of prolonged extracorporeal cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with acute,reversible cardiac or respiratory failure.A total of 31,902 patients have been managed with ECLS since 1975 with the following survival rates:newborn respiratory failure =15,482 of 20,258 (76%) and newborn cardiac failure =1,072 of 2,822 (38%); pediatric respiratory failure =1,758 of 3,151 (56%) and pediatric cardiac failure=l,611 of 3,762 (43%); and adult respiratory failure=601 of 1,145 (52%) and adult cardiac failure=238 of 764 (31%).
