核小体是真核生物中染色质的基本结构和功能单位，由DNA与组蛋白八聚体构成。组蛋白的储存、转运及翻译后修饰由组蛋白分子伴侣协助完成的。四膜虫细胞具有核的二态性，包括生殖系的小核和体细胞的大核。功能不同的大小核为研究组蛋白靶向转运提供了良好的模式体系。
