The wind energy has been growing rapidly in the past decade and nowadays many wind turbines are installed in the world,including seismic-active regions,for example,China.It is necessary to investigate the seismic performance of wind turbines in these areas.Since the prevalent type of wind turbines is the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) with a tubular steel tower and three rotational-symmetrical blades,a systematic seismic analysis for HAWTs is conducted in this paper.Firstly,an empirical formula to calculate the fundamental natural periods is derived,according to the cantilever beam model and 63 wind turbine prototypes,because the fundamental natural period plays an important role in the seismic calculation.Secondly,the finite element analysis is carried out for 9 typical wind turbine models.Their modal characteristics are investigated and both the seismic response spectrum analysis and the time history analysis are finished.The seismic load distributions in the tower and the blades are clarified.Thirdly,based on the results of the finite element analysis,the present seismic calculation methods are evaluated and a modified 2-DOF base shear method for seismic loads of wind turbines is established.
