In GNSS deformation monitoring with large obstructions, the GPS-only system is limited by various factors, such as the lower positioning availability and reliability, which is attributed mainly to the few tracked satellites and poor satellite geometry.Inclusion of BeiDou system into the GNSS deformation monitoring system will significantly increase the number of tracking satellites, especially thanks to its two types of Geostationary Satellites (GEO and IGSO).Therefore the combined BeiDou/GPS deformation monitoring system will ameliorate the geometry and then improve the availability and reliability of positioning particularly in the case of large obstructions. It would be interesting quantitatively to know what contribution the BeiDou can make to the deformation monitoring solutions in the varying obstruction situations. In this paper,we address the BeiDou’s contribution to the deformation monitoring solutions in the combined BeiDou/GPS system. The experiments will be conducted in varying obstructions specified by the different location, azimuths, heights and distances to receivers. The analysis includes the positioning accuracy, availability and reliability in those obstruction scenarios. The result shows that the current BeiDou constellation can improve the availability and reliability of deformation monitoring significantly when the GEO satellites are not blocked. In addition, the BeiDou’s contribution to deformation monitoring varies at the different places where the different number of GEO/IGSO satellites is blocked.
