Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy),an oxiaatlve stress inducer,is not only a risk factor for cardiovascular disease but also a new cause for neurodegenerative diseases.Previous work in our lab showed that Dioscorea alata feeding exhibited antioxidant effects in liver of HHcy rats. This study was to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Dioscorea alata on different regions of the brain (cortex, hippocampus, striatum, and cerebellum) in HHcy rats after methionine (Met) loading.Rats were divided into three groups:control (sterile saline,ip.,daily),Met (300 mg/kg,i.p.,every other day) and Met with Dios (50 g D.alata/kg,oral,daily).
