Food crisis is a matter of prime importance, which becomes severer as the population growth in the world. In terms of solving this problem, breeding was deemed to be one of the most effective ways.Whereas, traditional breeding was time consuming and laborious, the database was less sufficient to mect the requirement of plant breeders, which slowed the development of breeding. With the implement of computer and electronic technology in breeding, phenotyping was put forward in recent years to solve the bottleneck.Phenotyping can observe the plant close-up,collect the data quickly and more accurate than traditional remote sensing.Morphometric parameters and ecological parameters of plant were given special attention by breeders, such as height, leaf area index, leaf angle distribution, chlorophyll, biomass, root shape and so on.Numerous sensors were employed and novel algorithms were proposed in phenotyping to collect the data of those parameters.Based on the time of flight principle, LiDAR or laser could offer the point clouds data of plant, which made it possible to reconstruct the plant in three-dimensional.Spectral cameras included hyperspectral and multispectral were able to collect the ecological information that was associated to the vigour of plant.Thermal imaging technology offers a way for us to get the canopy temperature that could represent the water stress of plant. The shape and distribution of root is of great importance for plant. However, there were not effective methods to detect it conventionally except destructive measurement, some researchers employed MRT or CT to acquire the information. Moreover, Some phenotypingplatforms that integrate a lot of sensors were designed by several organizations for the past few years, which helped people to collect the data in the field.Meanwhile, many phenotypingtrials were carried on in lab.Phenotypinghas drawn the attentions of many companies, certain products have been designed and even brought to market.Unmanned aerial vehicle technology are developing rapidly, researchers have employed it in phenotyping, may be a development direction.Nonetheless, some insufficient of phenotypingare required to be perfected, novel methods needed to be proposed to lower the cost and improve efficiency, promoting phenotyping in the future. This paper represented a brief review about phenotyping to describe its development in recent years. Many parameters that were measured in phenotyping were introduced and discussed, sensors and methods relevanted to them were also classified and summarized.
