This talk will present a novel method, the optical bottle, that uses a focused laser beam to confine, concentrate and sort multiple nanoparticles in a microfluidic setting.Using optical arrangements similar to conventional optical tweezers,we demonstrate how optical bottles can be used to enrich the concentration of nanoparticles in a highly confined region by three or four orders of magnitude over the ambient concentration for the purposes of sorting, separation or biosensing.Examples for practical applications and a model for the quantitative analysis of the ensemble behaviors of the nanoparticles in the bottle will also be briefly described in this talk.
