Background: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents in Quebec.Even though this situation is painful and disruptive for the families, most of them survive this loss and sometimes even grow through it.The concept of family resiliency could explain how families manage the loss of their adolescent. Methods: Qualitative approach, grounded theory, is used to understand and explain the family resiliency process following adolescent suicide.A total of 17 persons coming from 7 families were encountered.Semi-structured interviews (13) were held with them (20 hours 35 minutes).Interviews and personal documents as farewell letters, televisions interviews, diary and homily were analyzed (more than 1900 pages) using the triple codification process of Strauss and Corbin. Results: The adolescent suicide is like a cataclysm for the family. Many elements will influence the family in their resiliency process as the family background, their cultural background, their believes, their emotions, the family cohesion and the formal and informal support they receive. Some family actions will be taken to help them progress on the family resiliency path as creating place for the adolescent and family, giving meaning to the suicide, speaking up and reaching out.As a consequence of a successful resiliency process, the family will always be grieving but they will have learned from the experience, they will have grown and their family relation will be stronger.Different types of family resiliency exist depending on the time it takes before the family gets engaged in the process and on the continuity of the process. Conclusion: Most of the families engage in a resiliency process. In postvention it is important to understand what the elements that influence the resiliency process are and how it evolves so the intervention could be adapted to the needs of the family. Finally, knowing which type of resiliency process the grieving family is in could facilitate the design and implementation of interventions for them.
