根据地球大龟裂模型中的温度周期假设,既然地球进入高温期可能出现局部熔融,进入寒冷期则会出现再次凝固。那么,大陆漂移的速度应该与温度周期相关。当地球进入高温期时,岩熔活动活跃,大陆可以裂解、漂移。而当地球进入寒冷期时,岩熔活动停滞,大陆漂移也可能出现停滞。美国华盛顿哥伦比亚特区卡内基研究所的两名研究人员西尔韦和贝恩经过研究发现,大陆并不是一直在运动,板块构造运动曾有过全部停止的时刻。他们通过调查铌、钍和氦的两种同位素在古岩石中的分布情况,这些元素都是地球内部温度随着时间流逝而逐渐冷却的可靠指标。这一冷却过程很可能意味着板块构造活动的相应减缓或停止。
